This book has been compiled and designed by the team at Regimental Headquarters of The Parachute Regiment, to commemorate the two decades of operational service The Parachute Regiment served in Afghanistan.

The British Army’s role in Afghanistan began in 2001 and ended in 2021. The Parachute Regiment was the first into Kabul and the last to leave, with its personnel serving across Helmand, Kabul and Kandahar. This book documents the story of the Regiment and 10 Air Assault Brigade during two decades of operational service. It pays tribute to the men and women who served with, or in support of Airborne Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Helmand, the Regiment and its supporting units faced an initial ‘break in battle’ to win control of the Province. This was followed by enduring tours, until politicians made the decision to end combat operations in 2014. The Regiment later deployed on force protection duty in Kabul as well as a “Train, Advise and Assist’ (TAA) programme. Then as international leaders made the planned decision to withdraw all remaining forces in 2021, the security situation in Kabul deteriorated and the Taliban made their move on the capital. An evacuation was mounted to airlift 15,000 British subjects and the Parachute Regiment was sent to Afghanistan for a final time.

Today, the Regiment remains at high readiness to project military power anywhere in the world in support of UK Defence. As its motto defines, it is ‘Ready for Anything!
