PARAS’10 – The Ultimate 10 Mile Endurance Race
Posted on
Regarded as The Ultimate 10 Mile Endurance Race, the PARAS’10 is based on the 10 miler from The Parachute Regiment’s P Company test week. The first event of test week, the 10-mile march is conducted as a squad over undulating terrain with each candidate carrying a bergen (backpack) weighing 35lbs (plus water) and a weapon. The march must be completed in 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Founded by WO1 JJ Wilson, The PARAS’10 was hosted by The Parachute Regiment in Aldershot between 1982 and 1993. Since the Paras left Aldershot in 1993, this legendary event was dormant until it was revived by Major Sam McGrath in 2008 in Catterick, N.Yorkshire. Due to its success in Catterick the race was taken to the home of 16 Air Assault Brigade in Colchester in 2012 and was revived in Aldershot in 2013. The primary aim of raising funds for SUPPORT OUR PARAS, whilst providing a challenging and enjoyable event, remains key to the events success.
The event costs just £35 to enter and is open to anybody over the age of 16. Participants can choose to either run the 10 miles, or TAB it ‘Para style’ with boots and a 35lb bergan. There is also the option to enter as a Cani-X entrant, if you and Fido fancy a new challenge. We are also fortunate enough to offer the PARAS’2 again in Catterick, for children aged between 8 and 14 years of age for just £10. All children must be accompanied by an adult (who runs for free) and entries must be made online before the day of the event.
2015 will see another PARAS’10 ‘Double of Trouble’ with races on 4th July in Colchester and on 6th September in Catterick. We are set for a record field this year, with entries for Colchester currently steaming ahead of Catterick.
This year also sees the FREE Colchester Garrison Show falling on the same day as the Colchester PARAS’10, with the very best of 16 Air Assault Brigade available for the public to view. As well as guns, helicopters and armoured vehicles on display, The Parachute Regiment’s Red Devils will also be making an appearance.
