THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT & AIRBORNE FORCES MEMORIAL SERVICE – 20 JUNE 15

There will be a Memorial Service on 20 June 2015 at the National Memorial Arboretum for those associated with the wider Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces family.

This Memorial Service is being held to commemorate soldiers who have died having served in The Parachute Regiment & Airborne Forces since its inception in 1940.  The Service will take place in front of our Memorial which was unveiled on 13 July 2012 by The Colonel in Chief, HRH POW.   The Memorial was erected as a national focal point and now provides a place of pilgrimage; particularly to those who have lost family members in foreign and inaccessible countries.

For more information, please see the letter from the Regimental Secretary below.

Mike Ellicock World Record Attempt 2013

London Marathon 2015 – NEW World Record

UPDATE 28/04/15

Mike Ellicock GWR 2015On Sunday 26 April 2015, Mike Ellicock broke the World Record for ‘Fastest Marathon Carrying a 20-lb Pack.’  Mike ran the 26.2 mile course in an impressive 2h 56m 39s, smashing the previous record by a whole 10 minutes!

He said, “Did it! There was an ex-Royal Marine and another guy both going for the same record on the day so it was a race and extra special to come out on top and get the record by 10 minutes. I ran the second half 30sec quicker than the first so much better execution than last time! Thanks for the amazing support to date – it would be great to get a few more donations if possible – so please help out if you can.”

You can still donate to Mike’s fundraising page here.

 ——————————————————

Running the London Marathon in a good time is a challenge for most people.  So imagine trying to break a World Record at the same time.  Mike Ellicock is doing just that, for the second time!

Mike Ellicock World Record Attempt 2013In 2013, Mike broke the World Record for ‘Fastest marathon carrying a 40-lb pack’ by completing the London Marathon in just 3h25.  This year, he is back to try and break the Record for ‘Fastest marathon carrying a 20-lb pack.’

The record currently stands at 3h 06m 16 seconds and was set at the Tokyo Marathon in February 2015.  Mike is aiming to complete the London Marathon in under 3 hours.

This year, Mike is raising money for both SUPPORT OUR PARAS and National Numeracy – two charities which hold a very special place in his heart.

Mike Ellicock World Record Attempt 2013In September 2000, Mike was platoon commander for A Coy 1 PARA when he was injured on operations, but thanks to a rapid casevac, he suffered no permanent damage.  He has chosen to raise money for SUPPORT OUR PARAS in aid of those who did not share his good luck and who need support for many years to come.

National Numeracy is an independent charity established in 2012 to help raise low levels of numeracy among both adults and children and to promote the importance of everyday maths skills. Mike is CEO of National Numeracy and believes that if you value something, believe that you could do it and then put the effort in, almost anything is possible.

We wish Mike the very best of luck and hope he smashes the World Record this year just like he did in 2013.

PARAS'10 finishers

PARAS’10 – The Ultimate 10 Mile Endurance Race

Regarded as The Ultimate 10 Mile Endurance Race, the PARAS’10 is based on the 10 miler from The Parachute Regiment’s P Company test week.  The first event of test week, the 10-mile march is conducted as a squad over undulating terrain with each candidate carrying a bergen (backpack) weighing 35lbs (plus water) and a weapon. The march must be completed in 1 hour and 50 minutes.

PARAS'10 posterFounded by WO1 JJ Wilson, The PARAS’10 was hosted by The Parachute Regiment in Aldershot between 1982 and 1993.  Since the Paras left Aldershot in 1993, this legendary event was dormant until it was revived by Major Sam McGrath in 2008 in Catterick, N.Yorkshire.  Due to its success in Catterick the race was taken to the home of 16 Air Assault Brigade in Colchester in 2012 and was revived in Aldershot in 2013.  The primary aim of raising funds for SUPPORT OUR PARAS, whilst providing a challenging and enjoyable event, remains key to the events success.

The event costs just £35 to enter and is open to anybody over the age of 16.  Participants can choose to either run the 10 miles, or TAB it ‘Para style’ with boots and a 35lb bergan.  There is also the option to enter as a Cani-X entrant, if you and Fido fancy a new challenge.  We are also fortunate enough to offer the PARAS’2 again in Catterick, for children aged between 8 and 14 years of age for just £10.  All children must be accompanied by an adult (who runs for free) and entries must be made online before the day of the event.

PARAS'10 No Roads2015 will see another PARAS’10 ‘Double of Trouble’ with races on 4th July in Colchester and on 6th September in Catterick.  We are set for a record field this year, with entries for Colchester currently steaming ahead of Catterick.

This year also sees the FREE Colchester Garrison Show falling on the same day as the Colchester PARAS’10, with the very best of 16 Air Assault Brigade available for the public to view.  As well as guns, helicopters and armoured vehicles on display, The Parachute Regiment’s Red Devils will also be making an appearance.

Keep Calm and Enter
